The End of an Era: Remembering Ajit Pawar (1959–2026)
The news that broke on the morning of January 28, 2026, has left a profound void in the heart of Indian politics. Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a towering figure in the state’s socio-political landscape, passed away in a tragic plane crash near Baramati.

For a man who lived his life at a relentless pace, always on the move for his people, the suddenness of this tragedy feels particularly surreal.

The Incident: A Routine Flight Turned Tragic
Early Wednesday morning, a Learjet 45 (registration VT-SSK) took off from Mumbai, carrying Ajit Pawar, his personal staff, and two crew members. He was en route to his home turf, Baramati, to attend a series of public rallies for the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections.

According to reports from the DGCA, the aircraft encountered severe difficulties during its landing approach at Baramati Airport around 8:45 AM. Preliminary data suggests that poor visibility may have forced a second approach, during which the aircraft tragically crash-landed at the runway threshold and burst into flames. Alongside the Deputy CM, four others—including his personal security officer, an assistant, and the two pilots—lost their lives in the accident.

A Legacy of "Dada"
Known affectionately across Maharashtra as "Dada" (elder brother), Ajit Pawar was much more than a politician; he was an administrator known for his "no-nonsense" style and iron grip on governance. Since entering the legislative assembly in 1991, he transformed Baramati into a model of developmental excellence.

His career was a masterclass in political maneuvering and resilience. Whether it was his six tenures as Deputy Chief Minister or his bold decision to reshape the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in recent years, Ajit Pawar was never afraid to take risks. He was a leader who prioritized "Kaam" (work) over rhetoric, often starting his day at 6:00 AM to meet with constituents and officials.

A State in Mourning
The reaction across the country has been one of collective shock. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a "leader of the people" with a deep grassroots connection. In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and leaders across the political spectrum—including his uncle Sharad Pawar—have expressed their heartbreak over the loss of a man who, regardless of political divides, was respected for his sheer efficiency.

The state has declared three days of mourning to honor his contribution to Maharashtra’s progress.
